A spectacular crayon p0rtrait painting by African American artist Charleston Wilson (1919-?) measuring approximately 16 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches behind glass in a frame measuring approximately 22 1/8 x 16 1/2 inches. Last origin Chicago.

Charleston Wilson was born 1919. Death date and place are unknown. He was a portrait sketch artist with Joseph Delaney. They were fellow artists working in the Washington Square area in Manhattan New York during the 1940’s.

During this time period,Charleston Wilson also painted fine art to be sold. African-American artist Joseph Delaney created a 1952 oil painting depicting Charleston Wilson at work.

The Schomburg Center have original photos of Charleston Wilson in Greenwich Village. Also the Historical Society of New York received portrait as a gift.
