Walter Sanford (1909 – 1987), a former Chicago native and resident, is remembered as one of the country`s greatest African American artists who created works in the abstract expressionist, cubist and impressionistic styles. Coined as the “Black Picasso” Sanford’s works hang in hundreds of private collections and galleries in Europe and the United States. Minor blemishes consist of limited craquelure, light loss on edges, minor wood splitting evident on near bullfighter’s arm, horizontal crack en verso end to end, and slight bending of the board. Again, these do not significantly detract from the work. Work estimated to be created in March 1960.
